We still keep in touch and talk about our kids and our careers. In that previous environment, I developed certain survival habits that, at the time, helped me navigate the challenges. But those skills weren\u2019t always understood\u2014or necessary\u2014in this new setting.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not always easy to open up about your past experiences, but doing so can help your manager see where you\u2019re coming from. Everyone\u2019s work history shapes who they are today. Being open about that builds understanding.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Example: In conversations, share, \u201cI process feedback best in writing and then follow up in person\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"If_you_receive_poor_feedback_ask_for_specifics\"><\/span><strong>If you receive poor feedback, ask for specifics.<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>It\u2019s tempting to shut down or freeze when negative feedback hits you. But this is actually your best opportunity to understand exactly how you\u2019ve been perceived. This doesn&#8217;t have to turn into a debate &#8211; but it&#8217;s absolutely okay to ask for specific examples, and offer any context that might have been missed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Example: \u201cCould you share one or two examples so I can better understand and address it?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Dont_feel_pressured_to_respond_right_away\"><\/span><strong>Don\u2019t feel pressured to respond right away.<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>If you\u2019re caught off guard, ask for time to process the feedback and follow up later. And just so you know:<em> you can request a follow-up meeting anytime.<\/em> Even if it\u2019s a month later and it\u2019s still eating away at you, it\u2019s okay to go back and say, \u201cI\u2019ve taken some time to reflect and would appreciate a chance to revisit our conversation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What matters most is that your manager sees you\u2019re coming from a genuine place. Explain that you needed time to reflect\u2014and that now, you\u2019re ready to share your thoughts. That vulnerability and thoughtfulness can go a long way.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Example: \u201cI\u2019d like a couple of days to reflect \u2014 can we reconvene next week?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"If_you_disagree_its_okay_to_say_so%E2%80%94with_respect\"><\/span><strong>If you disagree, it\u2019s okay to say so\u2014with respect.<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>You don\u2019t have to overly thank someone for feedback you truly don\u2019t agree with.\u00a0You can disagree and still be professional. You can advocate for yourself and still remain respectful.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Example: \u201cI see things differently and would like to circle back with more context \u2014 would that be okay?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Bottom_Line\"><\/span>The Bottom Line<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>This is about finding your voice again. About reclaiming your sense of worth and clarity\u2014even in a moment that left you shaken.\u00a0We all fall short sometimes but your manager should at least be willing to hear your side and help you grow.<\/p>\n<p>And I want to acknowledge something else: not every situation will end like mine. Toxic managers and\/or work environments <strong>do<\/strong> exist. If that\u2019s your reality, please know you\u2019re not alone\u2014and you don\u2019t have to stay in that space forever. Seek support. Talk to a mentor or counselor. Start exploring new opportunities. You deserve to work in an environment where your voice is heard and your effort is valued.<\/p>\n<p>Your turn: Have you ever had a performance review that took you by surprise?
